World record attempt challenge for Argyll and Bute’s knitters

11 Nov

ALZHEIMER Scotland’s Argyll and Clyde branch are calling on Argyll & Bute’s knitters to get involved in an attempt to make the largest hand knitted blanket in the world.

The current world record of the largest hand knitted non crochet blanket is held by The Ladies of Hatfield Christian Church in South Africa and measures in at 557.34 square metres, but in an effort to raise alzheimers and dementia awareness, Alzheimer Scotland has set the region’s knitters the challenge of creating a 710 square metre blanket.

The blanket’s 71,000 squares will represent the number of people in Scotland in 2010 living with dementia and the organisation hopes the exercise will not only draw attention to the disease – which affects an estimated 1,783 people across Argyll & Bute – but provide an opportunity for all those who take part to pass on the knitting skill to someone they know.

You can help by knitting squares measuring 10cm by 10cm or, if you don’t knit, by spreading the word to people who do. If you would like to take part, contact Alzheimer Scotland’s Chris Doogan on 01546 605517 or cdoogan@alzscot.org and you will be sent out an information pack filling you in on all aspects of this world record attempt and what to do with your completed squares. Come on Argyll & Bute, get knitting!
